Phosphates
& Chlor Alkali Business
Solaris ChemTech Ltd. is the largest manufacturer
of technical grade phosphoric acid in India.
The
technology for the Phosphoric Acid produced at its Karwar factory is
the solvent extraction process of IMI, Israel. This is a unique
process of manufacturing technical grade phosphoric acid, which uses
hydrochloric acid as its raw material. In addition, we manufacture
food and IP grade phosphoric acid conforming to BIS:10508 standards.
Caustic Soda, Chlorine and
Hydrochloric acid are the products of the Chlor Alkali business and
enjoy preferred supply status with large institutional customers
like Hindalco, Harihar Poly Fibres (a subsidiary of Grasim
Industries), West Coast Paper Mills and other institutional buyers.
The Chlor Alkali business is supported by 100% captive power
generation of 21 MW at the Karwar factory. Its main raw material -
industrial salt - is manufactured in its 3000 acre solar evaporation
salt works in Gujarat, near the city of Jamnagar. The backward
integration into power generation and salt, the strategic raw
material, enables the Chlor Alkali business to retain high cost
competitiveness. The key feature of this business is the integration
of the chlorine co-product with the phosphoric acid plant.
Two-thirds of the chlorine generated is converted into hydrochloric
acid, the raw material for the phosphoric acid plant. This ensures
high utilisation of the Chlor-Alkali plant capacity and reduces the
vulnerability of the business to market fluctuations of chlorine.

Phosphates & Chlor Alkali
At
Karwar, on the south west coast of India, is spread the Solaris
ChemTech Ltd. complex, enveloped in evergreen foliage. The entry
into the manufacture of chemicals was made when captive caustic soda
and chlorine plants gradually grew in size and began to cater to the
outside market. To meet the rapidly growing demand for caustic soda
and chlorine, in the early 70's, a full fledged chemical factory
near the coastal town of Karwar in Karnataka was set up. This was
followed up with the commissioning of a 24,000 MT per annum
Phosphoric Acid in the early eighties. Captive power generation was
started in 1987 and by 1997 the entire Karwar factory became 100%
dependent on captive power.
Strategic
backward integration into salt at Singach, near Jamnagar in Gujarat,
to produce industrial salt began in the early eighties.
The Karwar factory obtained the ISO 9001 certification first in the year
1995 and has been re-certified twice since then, the latest
re-certification being in 2004. The ISO 14001 certification was
obtained in the year 2001 and was re-certified in the year 2004. The
unit is also the proud holder of the OHSAS 18001 certification
awarded in 2003. We are
currently working on obtaining an Integrated Management System to
integrate ISO 9000, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001.
At Karwar, a facility to make a synthetic, solid material of construction (MOC),
KESTRA, with technology from M/s Niro Kestner, France started in 1997. Equipment made from this wonder material of construction are now fabricated and supplied to Niro Kestner's customers world wide.
